German Grammar

Time to sort out the active from the passive...

Here is a website which seems to explain it all really well...unfortunately, it does not give the German translations of the grammatical terms...na ja

how exciting was that!

i just watched germany (just about) beat turkey (3:2).
i would like to say i was very proud of both teams, i think they were fantastic.
it was for the most part a clean game, full of fair play (a couple of fouls which did not dictate the tone of the game) and both teams worked their butts off.
now i have a much better idea of why these football players earn so money

easily the best game of euro2008 so far...

Great News!!

Tyrell has got a place in Nelson Mandela School...we found out today.
From September all three boys will be at the same school - finally!

we have a new blog

its about boys' education.
visit: http://bwbs.blogspot.com to find out our news and views on this *very* important subject!
i guess if i'm realistic, it won't be undated more often than this one, but i hope that i can encourage the boys to give constructive ideas about how school could be better
and maybe...we can have some ideas that schools might actually be interested in?
please visit and add comments...

"Seufszt": Could this be the most difficult word in the world?

I am trying to finish off this script for a short film and it's in German, so I keep having to write this damn word. I've never used it in real life (it means "sigh") and I don't think I've heard anyone say it, apart from when they are reading my script to me.
It's impossible to pronounce, ridiculous to spell.
What kind of word is this?
Could it be the most difficult word in the world?

Boys in School

Hmm....need to do some research on under achievement of boys and under achievement of "immigrants" - looks like we are hit twice.

Found this link: http://boyseducation.blogspot.com/2007_05_01_archive.html
which has articles on the situation in England, as well as in Germany.

More soon...

Lewis Otoo's Family

hello this is lewis otoo (lewis typed that bit himself!)

i did play a lot of playstation ps, and that was fun. i played spiderman and racing. and when i was playing spiderman racing, when it was my last chance, kind of, there was mummy on the stage and she said on the stage, tyrell did have a 1.

and i met a kung fu fighter world cup.

that's everything.

Black History Month Conference

Mum said two amazing things about me (it would be a bit like showing off if I said what they were). And talked a lot about us three. It was amazing in Hamburg. Playing football was amazing, it was so much fun. I was playing football with Jonas, Marcin and Dion and Lewis. Yesterday I got to play table football with Eric and Dion and Lewis and that was also amazing.
And I found the whole weekend in Hamburg altogether, if I could give from points 10 to 1, I would give 9 points.
Almost everything was amazing.

Black History Month: Malcolm X and Sojourner Truth

Last weekend we began to watch Spike Lee's Malcolm X - we are watching it in episodes as the film is really quite long. Still the boys liked what they saw so far. Dion thinks Malcolm Little's hairstyle in the beginning of the film was very wrong and didn't understand why he and his friend walked the way they used to.

We also watched Alice Walker's reading of "Ain't I a Woman?" by Sojourner Truth.

We learnt that her name used to be Isabella Baumfree and that she chose to change her name when she was freed as a slave. We also learnt that Sojourner was still actively campaigning against racism well into her 80s. We think she was an impressive woman.

We were inspired to think about the discrimination children face - which Dion summed up in the statement: "Ain't I a person?"

A Review of "When We Were Kings"

I thought James Brown looked really weird.
I think Muhammad Ali was trying to convince everybody that he was going to win.
I liked it.
It's more like a history film. There could have been more of a storyline.

Black History Month: Barack Obama & Muhammad Ali

What do Barack Obama and Muhammad Ali have in common?

Today, they were both featured personalities in the letydiboys focus on Black History Month (February in the States and in Germany - at least in Hamburg and Heidelberg).

We watched the music video below (see post on Wednesday, February 6th 2008) and found out (long live Wikipedia) that:

  • he shares Grandmaa Flo's birthday - August 4th
  • he was born in 1961
  • his dad was a Black Kenyan and his mum was a white US person
  • his stepdad was from Indonesia
  • he spent most of his childhood in Hawaii, but lived in Indonesia for some time too
  • he studied law
(I didn't read the bit about smoking, drinking & cocaine out loud to them - plenty of time for them to learn all about that...)

We then talked about Muhammad Ali - the logical link from one to the other escapes me now - in any case on Thursday we will watch "When we were Kings" (tomorrow Dion is with Jonas). This evening we watched a small clip:

I hope to be able to persuade the boys to blog about BHM themselves this month.
For today, I console myself with the fact that Lewis finally learnt how to say "Muhammad Ali" (he kept saying Mudamed or something similar) and that he fell asleep singing "Lewis Buma Ye! Lewis Buma Ye!"

Me & my goddaughter Jonna!

Look! I've got stripy stockings too! And my slippers are pinker & furrier than yours...

Looks like I still get the thumbs up...!

This is great... I cross my fingers for Obama and the United States...
